Fundamentals of Graphic Design

intro to graphic design

As graphic design becomes more visible and prevalent in our lives, graphic design as a practice becomes more important in our culture. New York Film Academy offers 1 Graphic Design degree programs. It's a small, private for-profit, four-year university in a midsize city. We’re going to take you through 9 of the best graphic design schools in Los Angeles to help you make your decision about where to study—and also offer some compelling alternatives. Students explore how to use graphic elements and typography to create effective logos and symbols.

Or, if you’d rather study online, there’s three different time zones to choose from so you can study whenever works best for you. Students also get hands-on in skills-based workshops in 2D and 3D design-specific media. There’s also critical theory seminars, internships, international design study tours and a senior thesis. USC also aims to create well rounded designers, so all students on the Design BFA have to complete modles in a complementary field such as business, marketing or advertising.

ArtCenter aims to create a new model for art and design education in the 21st century—taking a conservatory-like approach to teaching and learning. Given its name, ArtCenter College of Design offers an Undergraduate degree in Graphic Design, which, in their own words, teaches students “to infuse words and images with life and meaning”. Chapman’s Graphic Design offering gives students hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment and software—including the all important Adobe Creative Suite but also 3D printing and laser cutting.

Graphic Design Basics: Core Principles for Visual Design

The primary purpose is to view the images, and everything else is stripped away so people scroll without distraction. A great example of ‘whitespace’ is the blogging platform, Medium. Medium’s website doesn’t distract its users with ad banners or frustrating pop-ups. Instead, it prioritizes the right content and shows information that readers want to see. Instead of showing the published date, it shows the length of time it takes to read – which is very clever. Even if you have multiple goals in mind for your content, pick one and make sure your design makes it  clear to the end user what the goal is.

People often abandon an e-commerce site because the product image is not of a high enough quality to help them make a decision. When you choose images as part of a design, make sure they are high-definition (HD) and appropriate to the device your audience will use. In this blog, we’ll look at each of these fundamentals so you come away with a deeper understanding of graphic design and how to use it in your marketing. When you enroll in the course, you get access to all of the courses in the Specialization, and you earn a certificate when you complete the work. Your electronic Certificate will be added to your Accomplishments page - from there, you can print your Certificate or add it to your LinkedIn profile.

Illustrations are often included as part of web, marketing, and brand design — but they’re also used in other ways. Some designers focus solely on offering illustrations and will work with larger design teams, contributing individual assets for various projects. Or, if we refer back to the Starbucks example, all marketing campaigns throughout the year would need to adhere to the same creative expression guidelines.

The class is completely free, but if you want to earn a certificate to feature on your resume or design portfolio, you’ll need to purchase a subscription to Alison. Get a solid foundation of graphic design in this quick, jam-packed course offered by the folks Canva. Canva’s Graphic Design Basics class is comprised of twelve bite-sized lessons, each covering a foundational element of graphic design along with an activity that puts your new knowledge into practice. The college is housed in Eliot Noyes’s former IBM Aerospace Headquarters, an American Mid Century Modernist and Brutalist icon. The USA’s second biggest city has got it all—and there’s also no shortage of places where you can study graphic design. Learning the principles of graphic design should be the foundation of your education.

Are you considering becoming a graphic designer but want to be working online? Kit Houses from Sears, Roebuck

sears and roebuck house

Sears houses, sold in kits and delivered to your local railroad station, were the biggest and most ambitious product offered by the company that sold everything via a catalog. In 1908, Sears issued its first specialty catalog for houses, Book of Modern Homes and Building Plans, featuring 44 house styles ranging in price from US $360–$2,890. As its mail-order catalogs were already sent to millions of homes, Sears had a distinct advantage over other kit-home competitors. Modern Homes catalogs were issued most years (apparently sometimes twice a year) from 1908 until 1940, although there are a few years for which no catalogs are presently known. In the beginning, Modern Homes designs were assigned numbers rather than names, but soon titles—often suggesting a style provenance—began to accompany the attractive illustrations.

"You realize you live in an example of what Sears was able to accomplish back in the day when they were the biggest catalog seller in the country," says Andrew Mutch, who owns a Sears home outside Detroit. Sears issued its first Christmas catalog in 1933, featuring such must-have items as a Mickey Mouse watch, a Lionel electric train set, a “Miss Pigtails” doll and live singing canaries. In the decades that followed, the catalog would be adorned with Christmas scenes, even as its pages swelled. By 1968, when it was officially renamed the “Wish Book,” the catalog boasted 225 pages of toys and 380 pages of gifts for adults, for a grand total of 605 pages. The Malden (Model No. 3721) cost $2641 in the period between 1933 and 1940.

Other styles included the Vallonia, the Martha Washington and the Crescent. Sears even offered a six-classroom schoolhouse, complete with an auditorium and library. Sears promised that, working without a carpenter and only rudimentary skills, a person could finish their Sears mail-order home in less than 90 days. Most customers, however, relied on local builders to put their house together.

In lowering the barrier to entry, it had allowed Sears to sell far more kit homes far faster than any of its competitors. The company ended up foreclosing on tens of thousands of its very own customers. But by then, Sears houses had become a staple of the American landscape.

Sears Homes

Richard W. Sears turned a handsome profit, then moved to Minneapolis to establish the R.W. While we were there, we met an interesting couple whose mission it is to restore historical homes in downtown Cordele. I’ve been admiring, with interest, the progress on a big old home across from the downtown post office for the last year or more so it was really interesting to meet the people doing the work. Don’t rely on light fixtures or plumbing, because those components were sold outside the kits as well, she says. Websites can provide a lot of tips on what to look for, or it is possible to bring in someone for an authentication. Quinn led the effort to establish the Field Club Historic District with the National Register of Historic Places.

The Story on Sears Houses

“If it wasn’t an architect-designed or building-designed home, there was a good chance it was going to be a one-off or it could be a kit home,” Quinn says. Official property and mortgage records can be helpful, although sometimes old files go missing, which was the case when Ed Quinn went to continue his research on the original city permits for Omaha’s Field Club neighborhood about a decade ago. With several factors at play, it can be hard to distinguish a Sears house or a pattern-book house from other builds from the same era. "The whole kit home phenomenon is pretty unique to architecture in the United States of America. So therefore I feel very strongly that we must save at least a percentage of these houses," she says. When Mutch purchased the home, he received a rather unusual housewarming gift from the previous owners — a binder of information on Sears homes. By the 1950s, Sears had opened more than 700 stores in the United States and had expanded into Mexico and Canada, where it joined forces with a Canadian mail-order company and became Simpson-Sears.

"It's where you went when you didn't have any money to shop at the other stores," she says. The Hamilton model home, now owned by Andrew Mutch, under construction in Novi, Mich., is pictured in 1926. He isn't old enough to remember Sears in its prime, but he says he and other kit home owners are saddened by the company's financial troubles. "I realized not only was this a house, but there's this whole story behind the house," Mutch says. "Being middle class and being able to go buy and own a home that you can build with your own hands" makes the houses special, he says.

Although it is sometimes claimed that no Sears kit homes were built after 1940, Sears continued to offer pre-cut kit homes through 1941 and into early 1942. Primarily shipped via railroad boxcars, these kits included most of the materials needed to build a house. Once delivered, many of these houses were assembled by the new homeowner, relatives, friends and neighbors, in a fashion similar to the traditional barn-raisings of farming families.

More recently, prefabricated construction has been heralded as the future of affordable, eco-friendly housing (including high-rises), since it’s easier to cut down on waste when materials are cut in a factory compared to traditional on-site construction. Still, today's prefab home construction isn't ready to become the housing revolution some architectural boosters predicted. Transporting homes can be expensive, and some prefab housing developments have run into design flaws and technological roadblocks. In comparison, getting your home straight from a Sears catalog sounds pretty good. Sears may be leaving our malls, but physical mementos of the company’s heritage live on across the United States. In fact, to many architectural historians, they are more desirable than ever.

And it’s around this time that Richard Sears saw a way to sell even more. The terms were easy, requiring a down payment of 25% of the cost of the house and lot, as little as 6% interest for 5 years, or a higher rate for up to 15 years. More radically, the application form asked no questions about race, ethnicity, gender or even finances. This made home ownership possible for thousands of buyers who were not welcome at their local banks. Most of the houses had two or three bedrooms, although some had four or even five. The majority had only one bathroom, and some, especially in the early 20th century, had none, since many rural and even some suburban areas lacked piped-in water and sewers or septic fields.

Optional materials included window screens, storm windows, plasterboard, plumbing, and heating and electrical fixtures. In addition to blueprints, a construction manual with step-by-step instructions was included. In 1935, some newspaper reports stated that Sears had "discontinued" the "modern homes department". However, there's no evidence that Sears actually stopped selling homes and it continued to issue a new "Modern Homes" catalog throughout the 1930s.

Sears Kit Houses: Affordable Housing in the Early 20th Century

They had enough supplies and reach that their Honor Built products could span a large gamut of projects from small to large to satisfy alpost any need of the public. There is some debate about whether some homes from Sears that were built in 1941 and 1942 qualify as Sears Modern Homes. However, many houses described as Sears Homes are not true Sears Homes, being either the product of another kit home manufacturer or not a kit home at all. A former warehouse of the complex was repurposed by Chicago Police into the Homan Square facility. It gained national notoriety due to its characterization in the media as a CPD 'Black site'. The Power Station is a rectangular, nominally single-story, brick structure measuring 114 by 230 feet (35 m × 70 m).

Before Folding 30 Years Ago, the Sears Catalog Sold Some Surprising Products

The company's growth continued through the 20th century, and by the 1960s it was the largest retailer in the world. Changing trends in retail sales and methods led to a decline, and the company's mail order business was scaled back in 1987, moving out of these premises. The corporate headquarters had been moved in 1973 to the Sears Tower, so the complex then stood vacant. Its closure of the complex presented the city with a redevelopment problem. Homes in a box, delivered to the local train depot from regional manufacturers, allowed many a frugal home buyer to get a good quality house for a reasonable price. The styles ranged from the Craftsman-style bungalow of the 1910s and 20s to the English Cottage and Spanish Revival as well as the ever popular Colonial Revival and its subtypes.

Before drywall, plaster and lathe wall-building techniques wereused, which again required skilled carpenters. Hunter acknowledges smaller homes, including the kit houses, are being torn down and replaced by McMansions. The catalogs proved to be popular, and over time different products were added and tested — including houses. The 1960s brought more competition, in the form of new discount department store chains like Target, Walmart and Kmart. Annual sales rose to $10 billion by the early ‘70s, and the company moved its headquarters into what was then the world’s tallest building, the Sears Tower in Chicago, in 1973.

Sears Houses In the U.S.

Many people haven't any idea what Gordon Van Tine or Aladdin offered, but almost everyone who has a passing interest in old houses has heard of the "Sears kit home." In addition to Sears, there were other companies that sold kit homes, including Aladdin, Gordon Van Tine, Montgomery Ward, Harris Brothers and more. Not surprisingly, the Midwest has an amazing collection of Sears Homes in particular and kit homes in general. Below are a few pictures of the kit homes I’ve found during my travels in the Midwest. Sears’ simple, warm and customer-service-centered approach helped it stand out among mail-order competitors like Montgomery Ward and Hammacher Schlemmer.

Sears expanded by opening stores.

As shopping malls became ubiquitous across the nation, Sears stores served as familiar anchors, along with fellow chains like J.C. With the rise of the automobile, the mail-order boom in the United States slowed down, but Sears managed to stay successful by expanding consumer credit with its “No Money Down” policy and, in 1924, opening its first retail store in Chicago. After launching the Kenmore brand (appliances) and Craftsman brand (tools) during the 1920s, Sears even expanded into auto insurance, launching Allstate in 1931. When the Elgin Watch Factory, which had employed a quarter of the town, closed in 1964, Elgin entered a localized recession, sparing it from the renovation craze of the 1960s and 70s. Instead, Elgin’s Sears homes simply sat there through the decades, largely untouched.

Instead of abandoning the sale of millwork and other building parts, why not change the way these goods were sold? What if customers could pick a plan for their dream house from a Sears catalog? One order could include everything—nails and screws, paint and roof shingles, windows and doors, woodwork, staircases, and mantelpieces. Sears was not the only company selling mail-order houses; however, it was reportedly the largest.

Sears Homes were kit homes that were sold right out of the pages of the Sears Roebuck catalog in the early 1900s. More than 370 designs of kit homes were offered – everything ranging from Arts and Crafts bungalows to foursquares to Colonial Revivals. These homes came in 30,000-piece kits and were shipped to all 48 states. Sears promised that a man of average abilities could have these homes assembled in about 90 days. These framing systems did not requirea team of skilled carpenters, as previous methods did. Balloon frames were builtfaster and generally only required one carpenter.

Sales slowly recovered as the United States emerged from the Great Depression. Some builders and companies purchased houses directly from Sears to build as model homes, speculative homes, or homes for customers or employees. That 1920 house on Meredith Avenue is Sears Model Home No. 126, according to Sarah Addleman, who recently finished a master’s thesis on identifying Sears homes. She says Omaha likely has other examples, but they can be tricky to identify because most homes of that age—the youngest Sears kit house would be more than 70 years old—have undergone additions and remodeling.

Sears, Roebuck and Company's Modern Homes program began in 1908 and ended in 1940. During those years, about 75,000 well-designed, well-constructed and economical houses were sold to American families. They ranged from pocket-sized English cottages to three-story, five-bedroom suburban manses; from lightly built garages and fishing camps to heavily framed houses that included two-story columned porticos, sleeping porches and porte-cocheres. Some of the earliest, marketed to areas without water or sewer services, had no bathrooms.

In so doing, they helped usher out the era of the custom site-built house, replacing it with the promise that homes could be standardized and affordable. Long before the advent of housing developments and the modern suburb, it was the Sears kit home that gave Americans their first taste of 20th-century domestic life. In theory, really handy homeowners could—and some did—put together their own Sears houses with only the aid of the instruction manual. More often, the actual construction was left to—or at least required considerable help from—a local builder. Over the 30-year lifespan of the Modern Homes program, the various service systems within the house—such as plumbing, electricity, and heating—became more complex, so that owners were more likely to call in trade specialists.

Sears houses were often built in multiples, creating entire homogeneous neighborhoods. The five- and six-room houses of what became known as the Standard Addition, which included many bungalows and Foursquares, cost roughly $3,600 to $4,600 and were regarded as unusually fine examples of worker housing. He was a merchandising genius credited with inventing Sears, Roebuck and Company’s Modern Homes program, which provided well designed, well constructed, economical shelter for perhaps 75,000 American families between 1908 and 1940. Today, buyers are still snapping up vintage Sears houses just as eagerly as they did 80 years ago. Identifying Sears Homes has become a pastime among history enthusiasts because of their sturdy structure, the do-it-yourself nature of construction, and the popular architectural design concepts. It even halted sales of houses themselves for a short time before restarting sales.

Most included the latest comforts and conveniences available to house buyers in the early part of the twentieth century, such as central heating, indoor plumbing, telephone, and electricity. Most Americans in the early 20th century lived in multigenerational houses with different rooms allocated for different family members. But the Sears kit popularized newlywed homes and jumpstarted single-family living. It also made modern conveniences like electricity and central heating more widely available to Americans of all social classes. Why did a company renowned for its catalog success choose to sell homes? A former manager of the Sears china department turned a loss into a sales leader when he suggested bundling this stagnant inventory into a home kit.

Johnson escalated the most recent turmoil among his GOP colleagues last week after agreeing to the floor vote on the $95bn foreign aid package. For a small degree of change in the lot’s angle, you can save money on the cost of the land because it is notthe preferred or ideal lot. In other words, some developers will not build on a plot of land because it will cost toomuch money to level the ground and create a sturdy foundation. When building on a sloped lot, you need to consider the degree of change for the slope. Essentially, with uphill slopes, your home will look taller and more pronounced in the neighborhood.
